ACCOUNT ACTIVATIONS
Hi all!
This is really for staff but I suppose there's no major secrets what I'm asking for so here goes.
Is there any way we can post a sticky in the new members thread (preferably something LARGE and in a bold colour so no one can miss it?
I'm thinking of someone writing a note for new members to ask them to post at least ONE er, post(!)....even if it's just to say ''HI'' or summat?
Explain, in this post, that this is to make sure a real-live person is asking to join the forum, and not some spam-bot type thing.
The reason I'm asking is that probably some of you Mods/admin have noticed that the spam emails we are getting are looking more & more 'real' each day. Usually the names look like this ;
GGIncemiplealia or maybe GorBrooneBoth, (that type of thing) and when I view their email properties they usually look like this; brierride@2008ratedsites.net. or dopkind@gmx.com, that kind of thing, which pretty much look like a dead giveaway that they ain't real.
However, recently I've had a few now using googlemail accounts and the names look genuine, but hard to tell now if they are or not.
For instance, had one today (with a similar one yesterday) and the name was HemoVambVom, which LOOKS like a suspicious account until you check the email properties, in this case it was registered to a jacklynlincoln99@gmail.com.
Now, I'm at a loss whether or not to ban them immediately, or not?
However, the 'person' (if that's what they are) hasn't posted a single thread, so I'm thinking 'spammer' and I would be leaning towards ''ban''.
But I'm not sure now as it's a 'proper' name being used.
Spammers will always find a way around things, and using 'real' names (but bogus email accounts) would definitely be on their list of 'things to do if all else fails'.
So, would it be possible to set up a big notice to new members?
Maybe it could go on the main home page or summat?
Just a thought.
Thanks.
Neil
